Joseph Banks and his party saw this species at: Endeavour River, Australia (17 June - 4 August 1770) This broad-leaved grass with attractive flowering stems was named by Robert Brown in 1810 in honour of Sir Joseph Banks. In Australia it occurs only in far north-eastern Queensland but it extends into New Guinea and to the Philippine Islands.
